Curriculum

At Mawgan-in-Pydar Primary School we aim to give our children the knowledge, skills and understanding to achieve to their full potential academically, socially and emotionally. This takes place in the context of a safe and nurturing school environment where each individual child is known and each individual child’s learning journey is unique to them.

We strive to give our children the necessary skills to prepare them for life in modern British society. As a truly inclusive primary school, our curriculum reflects both the context of the school and the experiences of our children. This enables our children to be aspirational, to fulfil their potential and reach the highest of expectations that we have of them. We want all of our pupils to truly do the best they can in everything they do,

Our priority is to enable our children to succeed in the 21st century by providing a rich, relevant and exciting curriculum. In doing so our children will develop a lifelong love of learning. Reading for information and pleasure, writing for different purposes, being able to apply their maths skills to real-life situations, being able to explain, analyse and persuade is at the heart of what we do.

To this end we have invested in the Cornerstones Curriculum in order to give a consistency of approach to learning in all classes through four distinct learning phases. Every Imaginative Learning Project is organised around activities planned to Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express children’s newly acquired knowledge, skills and understanding. The themes are exciting, imaginative and devised to ignite in children a curiosity and fascination to learn more.

Intent

Our curriculum is broad, balanced and inspiring, ensuring that learning is engaging and challenging for all of our children. It excites, promotes and sustains children’s interests; fostering a natural curiosity and thirst for learning. Our children are taught how to be reflective learners, acquire new skills and build resilience. They develop a rich and deep subject knowledge through applying skills and demonstrating creativity in a variety of interesting, vibrant and modernised contexts. Our children begin to understand the purpose and value of their learning and see its relevance to their past, present and future.

At Mawgan-in-Pydar we truly value the whole child by ensuring that learning is done in a wide variety of ways including through a broad selection of extra-curricular activities, particularly use of our local Forest School; use of quality resources; developing meaningful partnerships with visitors in the local and wider community and offering educational trips and residentials that further enhance our children’s experiences and learning.

Developing a close and trusting relationship with our parents and carers to promote our vision, ethos and aims is of paramount importance and we ensure that parents and carers are included in the celebration of their child’s learning and development. It is our intention to provide outstanding education to ensure that all pupils can reach their greatest potential and live by life’s highest values.

Implementation

Our curriculum, the Cornerstones curriculum, is grounded on four cornerstones: Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express. It is a cross-curricular approach designed to enrich learning, engaging our pupils and enabling the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum. The Cornerstones Curriculum has high expectations to combine transferable skills, demonstrate a breadth of vocabulary and develop strong cross curricular links. Knowledge, skills and understanding are coherently sequenced within a progressive framework.

Subject leaders and teams coordinate and manage the curriculum across our mixed-age classes; they plan development, monitor coverage and standards, offer support and advice and initiate experience rich opportunities to express and celebrate learning. We also monitor standards termly using assessment information, through sampling of work in books, as well as talking to the children and gathering their views.

Parents and carers receive a termly curriculum map providing information on the Imaginative Learning Project (see individual class pages) and areas of study ensuring that this crucial parent/carer/teacher partnership, impacts positively on the development of their child.

Impact

Within our structured and carefully planned curriculum, the school aims to help each child, in their own way to:

  • acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills as defined within the National Curriculum
  • develop the ability to question and put forward their point of view 
  • acquire and extend language, mathematical, scientific, creative and technological skills; making use of these skills in the wider aspects of learning
  • apply themselves to a variety of tasks, making decisions both independently and as part of a group, as appropriate
  • acquire good learning habits including self-discipline and independence in learning
  • develop the ability to use their own initiative and recognise their own potential
  • aim towards self-improvement in all areas
  • recognise and celebrate their achievements and successes

Most importantly, children are academically, socially and emotionally prepared for secondary school, life in Modern Britain and the wider world.
