MFL

Intent:

We intend to inspire pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. We aim to help children grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies.

We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides an essential educational, social and cultural experience for all pupils, helping them to develop communication and literacy skills which lay the foundation for future language learning. In our school, pupils develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between our chosen foreign language and English.

It is well-documented that learning another language raises awareness of a multi-lingual and multi-cultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils' learning, giving them a valuable insight into their own culture and that of others. This is often a transformational experience and promotes open-mindedness and tolerance of other cultures, as well as reinforcing the characteristics of our own culture - and therefore cementing identity.

Most importantly, the learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects. It enriches learning across the wider curriculum. At Mawgan-in-Pydar we use a French Scheme that uses a consistent and progressive approach to learning.

Aims:

The National Curriculum aims and objectives for learning a modern foreign language are:

  •        to introduce children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun
  •        to stimulate and encourage children's curiosity about language
  •        to encourage children to be aware that language has structure, and that the structure differs           from one language to another
  •        to help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries
  •        to develop their speaking and listening skills
  •        to lay the foundations for future study
  •        to raise staff awareness of, and competence in, the chosen MFL

All children in KS2 (Years 3-6) have French lessons.
