At Mawgan-in Pydar Primary School, Art, Design, Music and Drama are interwoven through our Cornerstones Curriculum and form an intrinsic part of every Imaginative Learning Project (ILP).
The arts give children a myriad of skills through which they can express and communicate feelings that might not otherwise be articulated. From their earliest experiences in school children learn about the world and their place within it through responses to music, drama and the visual arts. We consciously enrich our curriculum with real arts experiences and ensure that they are given the arts skills to express mood, feelings, sense of self and self-worth.
We recognise that the arts are often the vehicle through which our most vulnerable children express themselves; through tearful responses to orchestral music, through drawings or drama. The arts give all children a greater sense of their own ability to create something of imagination – something that cannot be marked right or wrong but something that just is and is celebrated for being just that.
During their time at Mawgan-in-Pydar our children will develop an awareness of the visual elements, colour, media and artistic perception. They will learn to appreciate that the world may be viewed differently and that everyone’s work is unique and worthy. Through this arts and experience-rich approach to learning our children come to believe in their own ability to create work of beauty. The arts, quite simply, enable all children to create, to grow and flourish through imagination.

Art and Design
Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. They learn to make informed judgements, develop an aesthetic awareness and make and practical decisions. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures.

Design and Technology
Design Technology prepares our children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. It encourages our pupils to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real problems both as individuals and as members of a team. It involves identifying needs, generating design ideas, planning, making, evaluating and improving. Through well planned tasks, children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. They learn how to become resourceful, enterprising and capable citizens. We aim to, wherever possible, link our activities to other subject areas which encourages our pupils to notice connections and patterns in their learning. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. These are essential skills for our children to develop as they prepare to take their place as adults in society.

Music and Drama
Music and Drama are highly motivating and rewarding for children as they provide invaluable opportunities to freely and creatively, communicate ideas and emotions. These subjects allow pupils to experience different cultures and times as well as forging important links both with home, and the wider community. In turn, music and drama can help to develop a sense of group identity and unity as well as encouraging the development of individual skills and interests.
The learning of drama is enhanced in a variety of ways by visits from touring theatre companies, and theatre in education practitioners such as drama and movement specialists and storytellers. Opportunities to perform in a range of contexts both within and beyond school through class assemblies, drama workshops, partnerships and community performances enable our children to enhance their skills.
