PSHE & SRE

SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship

At Mawgan-in-Pydar we have taken on a whole-school approach for PSHE called SCARF. SCARF provides a comprehensive spiral curriculum for PSHE education throughout years R-6.  Using SCARF across all age groups ensures progression in knowledge, attitudes and values, and skills – including the key skills of social and emotional learning, known to improve outcomes for children.

The programme is centred on a values-based and ‘Growth Mindset’ approach, which promotes positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement. More than just a PSHE scheme of work, SCARF supports great learning every day.

There is a proven link between pupils' health and wellbeing, and their academic progress. Crucial skills and positive attitudes developed through comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) are critical to ensuring children are effective learners. This is something that we feel very passionate about at Mawgan-in-Pydar.

For each year group SCARF consists of six half-termly units of work that provide a complete PSHE and wellbeing curriculum, including mental health and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Below are the topics that are covered each half term.

Autumn 1: Me and my Relationships

Autumn 2: Valuing Difference

Spring 1: Keeping Myself Safe

Spring 2: Rights and Responsibilities

Summer 1: Being my Best

Summer 2: Growing and Changing

SCARF raises self-awareness, group awareness, collaboration skills, teamwork experience, respectfulness, preparing children for the wider world and their position in it.

If your child raises an issue at home that you are not sure how to respond to and you wish to gain further information, please see the class teacher in the first instance for guidance on what was covered in the lesson.
