WELCOME TO CLASS 1

Welcome to Class 1, we are a mixed Reception and Year 1 class. We encourage and foster a love of learning by creating stimulating environments and planning exciting activities. We aim to inspire and encourage children to become responsible and independent learners. We listen to the children in Class 1, about what they would like to learn, therefore the children have real ownership of their learning.

Key timings:
PE - Wednesday afternoon- please ensure your child's PE kit is in school and clearly labelled.
Year 1 children- please come into school dressed in your PE kit every Wednesday.
A Year 1 and Reception home-work grid will be sent home at the start of the term and available on Tapestry.
Year 1 spellings will be issued on Monday, practised daily every morning and quizzed every Friday.

For the Reception children in Class 1, we follow the Statutory Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage. This document is laid out in the Development Matters. The links below will take you directly to both documents, which are provided here for you to read.

We hope that you find the information useful on our class page, but please come and see a member of the Class 1 team if you have any questions or queries.

Welcome back!

Our KRP (Knowledge Rich Project) – Street Detectives

This term, we'll follow a route around our local streets and take pictures of the buildings, businesses and plants we can see. Talking to residents about the area will help us understand how the local community could be improved. We’ll learn nursery rhymes, write poetry and create persuasive adverts. Looking at photographs will help us to spot any similarities and differences between the houses and shops of today and the past. We’ll find out about the history of our school and talk to former pupils about their experiences. We’ll also study and draw maps, create a model of a local building, draw portraits of the people we have met and look at the work of urban artists.

Reminders

  •         PE afternoon is Thursday – please ensure your child comes to school dressed in a PE kit and that it is labelled.
  •         Please can water bottles be clearly labelled and brought to school every day.
  •         Please label all clothing clearly.

  •         Please read daily at home and record it in your child’s reading record.

Reception Children

Literacy

We will continue with our RWInc programme. In our literacy sessions, we will use the Talk for Writing approach to explore ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We will use a story map and actions to retell the text and write our own simple narratives. We will begin to write short sentences with words with known letter-sound correspondences using a capital letter and full stop.

Handwriting

In addition to our Read, Write Inc Programme, we will be exploring the foundations for fine and gross motor skills to develop our writing skills. In our handwriting sessions, we will practising one armed robot letters: h, m, k, p, r, p, n, as well as reviewing the letters learnt this past year.

Mathematics

This term we will be investigating numbers to 20, exploring 3d shapes and understanding how to manipulate them, exploring patterns and learning about sharing and grouping.

Creating with Materials

This term, we will create collaboratively, sharing ideas, resources and skills. We will choose and explore appropriate tools for simple practical tasks. We will select appropriate materials when constructing and making and share our creations, explaining the process we have used.

Being imaginative and Expressive

We will use our ideas, interests and experiences to develop storylines in our pretend play. We will sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs and be practising them on our stage. In our music sessions we will sing a song, practise making up new lyrics and play a steady beat on percussion instruments.

Understanding the World

This term we are learning all about materials and plants. We will investigate different materials and perform simple tests. We also be exploring the growth of plants from seeds and bulbs. We will observe the growth of plants first hand, recording changes over time and identifying what plants need to grow and stay healthy.

People and Communities

This term we will learn about town and country features of our local community. We will be looking at simple maps and how to use them We will be looking at the similarities and differences between seaside holidays in the past and now, drawing on our own experiences. We will also find out about religious stories and explore the similarities and differences between different people’s special stories.

Physical Development

This half term, we will explore gymnastics. We will learn different gymnastic actions and shapes and practise linking them together with flow. During the next half term, our focus is games. We will practise basic sending and receiving techniques and apply these skills during game-based activities.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Our SCARF themes this term are ‘growing and changing’ and ‘being my best.’  We will talk about how to keep our bodies healthy and safe. We will explore age-appropriate ways to stay safe online and name adults in our lives and those in our community who can help keep us safe.

Help your child prepare for their project

Please take a look at the home learning opportunities and choose some of the activities to complete at home together. Alongside our guided activities, we spend time learning through play and exploration of the indoor and outdoor environment. We choose our provision based on the needs of the children in the moment of their learning to enhance skills and prior knowledge.

TAPESTRY

At Mawgan-in-Pydar School, we use a system called Tapesty, an online system to record and share your child’s learning and fun throughout the foundation year.  You can download the application on your smart phone and tablet or use the computer and we will email you when a new page is added to your child’s learning journey, which you can view and comment on.

We love hearing about the stories and wonderful things you do at home, so please make your own observations and add your photos and videos. This is helpful for us in Class 1 to see the learning continue at home, so many thanks in advance.

Click on the Tapestry logo below to access the website and log in.

PHONICS

At Mawgan-in-Pydar School, we follow the systematic approach to phonics called Read, Write Inc. This is the way that your child will learn how to read and write.

It starts with learning bouncy and stretchy sounds that will build up the ability to break down words into sounds to read and blend them back together to spell. We have special actions that we add with the sounds to make learning enjoyable.

It is always helpful to practice what we are learning at school, but if you feel you are a little unsure on how to pronounce the sounds here is a clip from the RWInc site which will help you.

Below are the Year 1 spelling lists and an overview of the spelling rules/sounds to be taught for each wordlist. At Mawgan-in-Pydar, we follow the 'Shakespeare and More' spelling scheme. The spelling overview explains how this scheme works.

In line with the National Curriculum, these spellings will be taught through daily activities and investigations. There are lots of fun ways to practise these words, to help children remember the spelling sounds and rules. As an additional learning task, please practise these spellings at home. Please note, any additional learning you do at home will support your child’s learning at school.

Our class toy is Elmer the elephant. Each Friday, he will be taken home by a different child in the class. Please take Elmer on your adventures over the weekend and record what you do. It would be great if you could add pictures/videos and a write up onto Tapestry so your child can share their weekend news with the rest of the class. This activity helps develop children’s speaking and listening skills.

In our Early Years classroom at Mawgan-In-Pydar, we are using a play-based toolkit to assess and support effective language skills. As children develop speaking and listening skills, they are building a strong and stable foundation for literacy and learning.

Please take a look at the Wellcomm site for more information and videos.

Please can you hear your child read every day and share books on a regular basis to enhance their learning. We ask that you write in your child's reading record every time they read. It is an effective form of communication. From your notes we will be able to help and advise, as well as celebrate your child's reading achievements.
