WELCOME TO CLASS 5

Class 5 is the Foundation Stage classroom and it is the first class that your child will join when they start their learning journey with us at Mawgan-in-Pydar School. We encourage and foster a love of learning by creating stimulating environments and planning exciting activities. We aim to inspire and encourage children to become responsible and independent learners. We listen to the children in Class 5, about what they would like to learn, therefore the children have real ownership of their learning.

Key timings:
PE- Wednesday
Year 1 home-work grid sent home at the start of the term.
Spellings - Issued on Mondays, practised daily every morning.

In Class 5, we follow the Statutory Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage. This document is laid out in the Development Matters. The links below will take you directly to both documents, which are provided here for you to read.

We hope that you find the information useful on our class page, but please come and see a member of the Class 5 team if you have any questions or queries.
TAPESTRY

At Mawgan-in-Pydar School, we use a system called Tapesty, an online system to record and share your child’s learning and fun throughout the foundation year.  You can download the application on your smart phone and tablet or use the computer and we will email you when a new page is added to your child’s learning journey, which you can view and comment on.

We love hearing about the stories and wonderful things you do at home, so please make your own observations and add your photos and videos. This is helpful for us in Class 5 to see the learning continue at home, so many thanks in advance.

PHONICS

We follow a system called Read, Write Inc to teach our phonics. This is the way that your child will learn how to read and write.

It starts with learning bouncy and stretchy sounds that will build up the ability to break down words into sounds to read and blend them back together to spell. We have special actions that we add with the sounds to make learning enjoyable.

It is always helpful to practice what we are learning at school, but if you feel you are a little unsure on how to pronounce the sounds here is a clip from the RWInc site which will help you.

Below are the Year 1 spelling lists and an overview of the spelling rules/sounds to be taught for each wordlist. At Mawgan-in-Pydar, we follow the 'Shakespeare and More' spelling scheme. The spelling overview explains how this scheme works.

In line with the National Curriculum, these spellings will be taught through daily activities and investigations. There are lots of fun ways to practise these words, to help children remember the spelling sounds and rules. As an additional learning task, please practise these spellings at home. Please note, any additional learning you do at home will support your child’s learning at school.

OUR TOPIC

Over the next term, we will be learning about 'Woodlands’. Please see the 'Topic Web' for more details. We will continue to learn about our classroom environment and how it can help us be confident and capable learners. We will be following the children’s interests and as a vehicle to engage pupils further, we will link out of school learning through some exciting adventures.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would endeavour to hear your child read or share books on a regular basis to enhance their learning.

Within the daily routine, we aim to cover as much of our new topic as possible. We hope that your child enjoys their final term in Class 5 and if you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to come and see a member of the Class 5 team.

Thank you for your continued support.
