Communication language and Literacy
We will be reading a variety of stories and texts during the term, starting with narrative texts around our general themes of Space and in the second half of the term, Dinosaurs. We will investigate non-fiction texts, reading and creating instructions. We will learn about pattern and rhyme through reading and constructing poetry.
The children will be learning their sounds and high frequency words through a variety of fun activities, songs and games. We will be structuring sentences and working on increasing the children’s vocabulary.
Children will be developing the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. High levels of exposure to text and stories are an integral part of development at this stage and therefore the children will have access to a rich and diverse range of texts.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
Children will be following the National Framework for teaching Mathematics. They will cover the following areas: Counting, partitioning and calculating, securing number facts, understanding shape and handling data and measures. Mathematical activities will be from the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. During our problem solving, reasoning and numeracy we will learn about numbers as labels for counting and calculating alongside shape, space and measures.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World / Scientific and Technological Understanding
Class 4 will learn about different sorts of movement and how to describe these. We will predict what might happen, explore, collect evidence and communicate our experiences. Children will learn how to create and present text in a variety of styles and formats. As we value ICT so highly in education and the development of children, ICT is an integral element in every curriculum subject. We will be immersed in enquiry based activities during their day to day teaching and learning, particularly through the Knowledge and Understanding of the World element of the EYFS curriculum.
We will encourage the children to think about the concepts of ‘old’ and ‘new’ and think about changes over time. In the context of ‘time’, we will compare our busy day with others, investigating differences and similarities. We will be investigating machines and moving parts and making links to Cornwall’s industrial past by exploring machinery found around our local setting.
In a geographical context, we will be looking at our environment and thinking about ways we can improve, sustain and enjoy our beautiful world. During our space topic we will consider the Earth and beyond, finding out about the moon and different planets in our solar system.
Creative Development / Understanding the Arts
Class 4 will be focussing on collage and printing this term, building on the children’s artistic skills through the inspiring work of artists such as Henri Matisse. Art, design and music are an integral part of young children’s learning, helping them to express ideas and improve their fine motor skills. Art is therefore incorporated into many lessons and subjects. Creative development is a key element of the EYFS framework for Reception children. Music is an important part of everyday life in Class 4.and although our focus will be on rhythm and pulse, we sing each day.
Religious Education
We will be learning about Easter and why it is such an important time for Christians. We will also be reading and learning about Hinduism through traditional stories. Understanding other’s cultures and beliefs is an integral part of knowledge and understanding of the world. A study of Chinese New Year through stories, art, music and dance will be an important element to our Spring Term curriculum. We will also be celebrating St.Piran’s Day, an important local celebration of where we live.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development / Physical Development, Health and Wellbeing
In addition to our daily physical warm-up exercise, children will learn to copy and repeat simple skills and actions with basic control and co-ordination. They will start to link skills and actions and describe and comment on their and others’ actions.
We will be finding out about how we can keep healthy and safe. Children will learn to think about themselves, learn from their experiences and recognise what they are good at.
