English and Communication:
Children will be studying a variety of writing styles in this half term. Children will initially study poetry and learn to adopt certain styles as well as comparing contrasting poems. They will also look at features of poetry such as personification, simile and metaphor.
We will then move on to identifying essential parts of Playscripts. The focus will then switch to turning a traditional narrative story into a Playscript and then vice versa.
The next area of literacy that we will be working on is discussion and recount writing.
Modern Foreign Language:
The children will continue learning German as their MFL. The topics that will be covered during the second term will be a looking at German culture including an animal study. The emphasis will be on recognising the spoken word and developing confidence to respond to someone in German. Children will consolidate prior learning with months of the year, counting and also reviewing birthdays and greetings.
Mathematical Understanding:
The children will continue to follow the primary framework for teaching numeracy.
Block A (2 weeks): Counting, partitioning and calculating, has a strong emphasis on multiplication and division.
Block B (3 weeks): Securing number facts, understanding shape, where identifying the properties of shape and number patterns are key.
Block C (2 weeks): Handling data and measures, this focuses on constructing a variety of graphs and interpreting data.
Block D (2 weeks): Calculating, measuring and understanding shape, which uses formula to calculate the area of rectangles for example.
Children’s progress will be monitored and their ability assessed at regular intervals using a variety of different methods. Mrs Band, a teacher from Tretherras, will be coming in to work with the children on a weekly basis.
Science:
Class 1 will be learning about Electricity with Mrs Ellis-Davies (secondary school teacher.) This will allow children an enhanced practical opportunity in this area.
Children will also be working on ‘Earth, Sun and Moon’ which is a topic that fits our space theme perfectly. This will allow children to develop their knowledge about the reasons for which we have seasons and night and day for example. We will also focus on planets orbiting the sun and general aspects of the solar system.
Physical development, health and wellbeing:
Please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school. Professional coaches from Sportscene will deliver 2 hours of high quality Physical Education per week. The children will start the term working on football and gymnastics. They will then progress into multi skills including agility, balance and co-ordination. Invasion game skills will also be developed through tag rugby and dodge ball.
Historical, geographical and social understanding:
Children will be studying in a cross curricular approach starting with a study of Galileo Galilei and his impact on studying the universe. We will start with a focus on the telescope created during the 17th century. We will also look at how the Second World War had influences on our ability to send rockets into space and the development of our knowledge of the universe 30 years after. We will also look at astronauts and missions into space and what life is like today for an astronaut.
Understanding the Arts:
The children will be enjoying the arts in a variety of different forms. They will continue their violin lessons with Rachel Beale on a Wednesday afternoon, building on their knowledge of reading music, rhythm and timing.
We will also be studying the work of the legendary Vincent Van Gogh. We will look at the life and times of Van Gogh along with looking at some of his masterpieces. This will culminate with a trip to London to appreciate a variety of great work at the National Art Gallery.
Religious Education:
The children will continue to learn about other cultures, faiths and religions, developing their skills of empathy and understanding. Furthermore we will be Introducing Sikhs and investigating their beliefs in particular the teachings of Guru Nanak.
